Course Outline

vCFO Next Generation – Advisory in the AI Era
From financial reporting to forward-looking advice.

This course is open for enrolment and commences on Tuesday 1st September 2026

The role of the virtual CFO is evolving rapidly.

Clients increasingly expect their accountant to do more than explain what has already happened. They want help understanding what the numbers mean, what may happen next, where the risks and opportunities lie, and what actions they should be taking now.

At the same time, AI, automation and improved accounting technology are changing how financial information is produced, analysed and communicated. As routine reporting becomes increasingly automated, the value of the accountant is shifting towards interpretation, commercial insight, decision support and trusted advice.

vCFO Next Generation – Advisory in the AI Era has been developed as the critical next-stage update to our successful vCFO ToolKit and vCFO Advanced programs.

This practical 8-module course focuses on the capabilities accountants need to deliver a contemporary virtual CFO service — combining strong financial management skills with better advisory conversations, forward-looking analysis and the appropriate use of AI.

Throughout the program, you will learn practical strategies that can be applied immediately with your own clients. Rather than simply learning concepts, you will progressively identify opportunities within your client base and develop your own SMART Action Plan for implementing or strengthening your vCFO offering.

Course Content

Module 1 – The Next Generation vCFO
Explore how the vCFO role is evolving and what clients now expect from an accountant acting as a commercial adviser rather than simply a provider of financial reports.

  • The changing role of the accountant from reporter to adviser.
  • What distinguishes genuine vCFO services from traditional compliance and management reporting.
  • Identifying the types of clients most suited to ongoing advisory services.
  • Defining a clear vCFO value proposition and service model.

Learn how to identify advisory opportunities from the information accountants already see through tax, accounting, bookkeeping and client conversations.

  • Recognising financial and operational warning signs that create advisory opportunities.
  • Turning tax and compliance discussions into broader business conversations.
  • Using client discovery questions to uncover objectives, concerns and opportunities.
  • Creating a systematic process for identifying clients who could benefit from vCFO support.

Module 3 – Turning Financial Data into Business Insight

  • Identifying the financial measures that genuinely matter to the client.
  • Analysing profitability, margins, working capital and cash conversion.
  • Moving from explaining what happened to understanding why it happened.
  • Converting financial analysis into clear recommendations and actions.

Module 4 – Forecasting, Cash Flow and Scenario Planning

  • Using scenario modelling to test alternative business decisions.
  • Helping clients understand the cash and financial consequences of growth, investment and change.

Module 5 – Management Reporting and the vCFO Dashboard
Create management information that supports decision-making rather than simply presenting another set of financial statements.

  • Selecting meaningful financial and non-financial KPIs.
  • Designing concise dashboards and management reports.
  • Providing commentary that explains issues, trends and exceptions.
  • Linking management reporting directly to agreed business objectives and actions.

Module 6 – AI-Assisted Advisory
Explore how AI can increase the efficiency and quality of advisory work while recognising the continuing importance of professional judgement, confidentiality and human review.

  • Using AI to assist with financial analysis, research and identification of trends.
  • Developing draft commentary, scenarios and questions for client discussions.
  • Establishing appropriate controls around confidential client information and AI use.
  • Understanding why professional judgement and review remain fundamental to the vCFO role.

  • Structuring monthly and quarterly vCFO meetings.
  • Asking better commercial and strategic questions.
  • Presenting financial information in language clients understand.
  • Agreeing actions, responsibilities and follow-up after each meeting.

Module 8 – Building a Profitable Recurring vCFO Service

Defining different levels of vCFO service and their inclusions.

Pricing advisory services around scope and value rather than hours alone.

Transitioning clients from one-off advice to recurring advisory engagements.

Building an implementation plan covering target clients, service delivery, technology, capacity and growth.
